ALONZONorthwest Indiana Catholic VALPARAISO – St. Paul students looked to outpace cancer and support affected families, friends and classmates by spreading good will and donating funds during the school’s annual Relay Recess for Life. Teachers were proud of how Panthers of all ages pounced on the chance to collect donations for the outdoor walk that commenced on the sloped trails of the parish campus on May 20. β€œWe started the relay nine years ago when some of our teachers had been diagnosed with cancer,” said 16-year kindergarten teacher Donna Shane, who directed the event and was assisted by members of the school’s National Junior Honor Society. β€œWe said, β€˜Well, why don’t we bring the (American Cancer Society) Relay for Life to the school? It would be a perfect way to educate the children on different ways to be proactive against cancer.’” Students completed circuits outdoors, passing luminaries decorated with well wishes for friends and tributes to family members. The conclusion of the walk featured a traditional final lap, which was walked by this year's graduating class. As the school’s upperclassmen approached the straightaway that led to the school parking lot, younger students applauded the group. Then they joined their school families – named groups featuring a student from each grade level – to enjoy popsicles.Full story appears in the upcoming June 5 issue of the Northwest Indiana Catholic.
